I Opened a Bookshop

Towards the end of 2025, I began searching for a joy project; I'd always loved the idea of a bookshop in which I could run my workshops, but high street prices make setting up a venture like this practically impossible without large investment. So, I was overjoyed when I received a phone call offering me one of the artist's studios at Turner Dumbrell Workshops in Ditchling. These lovely studios are tucked away on the outskirts of the village and are primarily available to creatives and therapists. The trustees raise heaps of money for local charities, so it's a no-brainer for me to want to have my little business there. On NYE, I collected the keys; it was a frosty morning and I could hardly imagine how I would begin transforming the empty unit into a real bookshop! My two lovely grown-up sons took time off work to build me lots of shelving. I went for Ikea units as they are lovely and sturdy (and affordable!).

Next to the business of buying books - I knew I wanted to offer both new and preloved books, but how would I choose? Had I read enough? My goodness what an overwhelming task I had ahead of me (but I loved it!). People began to pop in and mainly tell me that a bookshop is a lovely idea, but - 'did I know I wouldnt make any money?'; even book suppliers and wholesalers warned me about the small margins and impossible competition with Amazon and Tesco!!!
"It's a joy project," I told them. I wasn't detered - I firmly believe that life isnt about money making - as long as I can pay my bills, it will be OK! I busied myself researching great book titles and even applied to become a member of the Bookseller Association (and I'm delighted to say that they accepted me).
On valentines day, I opened the bookshop with a Fairy Tale Cake and pink balloons. If you're ever in the neighbourhood, pop in to say hi!
